In the northern Italian city of Pavia since July 2018, the 29-year-old Ukrainian ex-national guardsman Vitaliy Markiv is fighting for his freedom. The court is trying to establish whether Markiv was involved in the death of the Italian photojournalist Andrea Rocquelli in May 2014 in the Donbass region, Ukraine. The Ukrainian who already spent 20 months behind bars in Pavia and Milan denies his involvement.

The accusations against Markiv are based on the testimony of Ilaria Morani, an Italien journalist, with the National Italian Press Federation representing the case in court. Having listened to all witnesses, Markiv's defence lawyers expressed careful optimism in the favourable court rulling as no direct or by-passing evidence of Markiv's involvement in the italian journalist's death had not yet been found.
Many activists in Ukraine and members of the Ukrainian diaspora from many Italian cities expressed their support for Vitaliy Markiv, they are convinced of his innocence and hope for the impartiality of the Italian judges who will be looking at Markiv's case. The case will continue at least till April 2019 with the next two hearings taking place on 22nd February and 15th March.
